For an album that’s almost two years old, Oracular Spectacular has certainly gotten an attention overload. If I need to explain to you who MGMT are, you probably aren’t a music fan. It’s strange and somewhat fishy that a band that has literally been around for (literally) about five years, with multiple chart topping hits, is only now flourishing in the complex and befuddled American music scene.
And they’re an American band! They’re from Brooklyn for fuck’s sake!

I’m not certain how MGMT avoided the public eye for so long. Perhaps the name change had something to do with it. Going from a name like The Management, which possesses a distinct familiarity, to MGMT was a ballsy decision, but it seems to have paid off.
There are better songs on the album than “Kids,” but it’s just so damn catchy that you stop caring.
The problem with unpredictably amazing “new” bands is that their music is always played the fuck out on the radio before people can learn to appreciate it. I find it interesting how the medium that served to make people famous now serves only to destroy the power that music (good or bad) has the potential to wield.
So stop listening to the radio. You’ll learn to like music more…or at least it’ll take you longer to hate it.
MGMT‘s next album, Congratulations, is set to be released in 2010.
