SuperDPS 2012 Grammy Predictions (and Results)

As I try to do for every major awards show, letting a few slip through my fingers, I thought I’d make my educated guesses at who might come out with some big wins. After the passing of Whitney Houston the day prior to the Grammys, I’d imagine she will have a major underlying (and overlying) presence at the ceremony. I’m predicting a very traditional show with very little surprise, but that’s what comes from proper, formal award shows. That’s why we watch the MTV awards, the VMAs, and the Golden Globes–for the intoxicated antics of celebrities who proceed to “ruin everyone’s night” and make Monday headlines.

One thing that I discovered about the Grammys recently is the difference between “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year.” It always seemed like a bullshit excuse to give out two awards for the same thing–as if the Academy Awards gave out Oscars for “Best Motion Picture” and “Coolest Motion Picture.” Evidently, “Song of the Year” awards the writing of the song, first and foremost, the collaboration of songwriters, not taking into account the final production of the piece. And “Record of the Year” rewards the song in conjunction with production value and sound. So, basically, the exact same award. This has cleared nothing up.

So let’s get into it. There are a lot of awards and very little time. As you may be aware, I will be commenting/updating these predictions via Twitter throughout the ceremony, so you can visit me there to congratulate me for being right, chastise me for being wrong, or just let me know how you’re just passing time before tonight’s premiere of The Walking Dead. Cheers!

(to see the full list of everyone nominated, click here) I skipped over many awards either because I don’t think they’ll be in the actual 3 hour show, or I have no intelligent guess to make and don’t give a shit who wins…

Stand Up at The Raven Leaves Our Midnight Anything But Dreary

Every Thursday night, the Raven Lounge in downtown Philadelphia makes the radical transformation from a hip, scenester club to a hip, scenester club with Stand Up comedy. It’s incredible. The Raven features modestly-priced drinks with the mandatory Philly specials, toys and games scattered around the tables and bar, and a ceiling covered in the ramblings of drunk chicks with glow pens. Needless to say, it’s an interesting locale. It is upstairs, however, where the Thirsty Thursday magic takes place. Comedians gather by the droves to perform on a small stage for a comfortably-sized audience. For this many funnymen (and women), the price tag of “absolutely fucking free” should be a no-brainer.

Comedians at the Raven are often doing their routines in front of fellow performers and a semi-respectful audience, so they use this opportunity to develop new material or further hone what they feel is the best of what they have to offer. As with anything else, the comics can be hit or miss, but you will never leave The Raven disappointed or having not laughed your ass off. Even if a particular comedian isn’t in your taste, the next 3 or 4 will be spot on.

As if we can’t mention this enough, comedy nights at the Raven Lounge every Thursday are run by the good people at Center City Comedy. The team of Cassidy, Cotton and Foley never cease to impress and always bring the best talent in the Philly comedy scene to the masses.

I will be back. Hopefully every week. Keep up the good work, everybody!

What are you laughing at? Main Street Comedy

Compared to the major comedy scenes like New York and Los Angeles, Philadelphia is a bit of a red-headed step child. It gets kicked around, picked on, and still tries its best to rise to notoriety. But good news, my beautiful ginger city–you’re well on your way.

Under the surface of Philadelphia’s strong mainstream Art and Theater world you’ll find the real comedy “scene”; a variable Middle Earth of do-it-yourselfers, home-grown talent, and voices that captivate and inspire audiences no matter where they are. The intimacy and camaraderie that exists in the small clubs, mini theaters, and smokey rooms give the viewers (or “normals”) a sense that they’re in on the joke; even when they’re part of it.

H. Foley and Chris Cotton have shouldered the enormous responsibility of creating an ideal atmosphere for spectators, comedy nerds, and anyone looking to get at least one of their feet in the door of the comedy industry.

They operate Center City Comedy, a weekly independent stand-up show (Thursdays @8:30pm at the Raven Lounge) featuring up-and-coming comedians. Foley and Cotton are relatively new to the comedy scene which keeps them fresh and exciting; certainly the best two men for the job. The two men know exactly what it’s like to be starting out in comedy, leading and learning at the same time.

Comedian Tom Cassidy (who also works with Center City Comedy) has enlisted Foley and Cotton to help him build his own showcase of comedic talent, utilizing an unbelievable assortment of up-and-coming local performers. Cassidy’s independent shows at Mad River in Manayunk (titled Main Street Comedy) have been steadily growing in popularity since they began in June of 2010. The theme of Cassidy’s shows vary based on what fits the purpose of Main Street Comedy that particular week.

May 2011′s show was titled Wednesday Night Live and began with a sketch featuring comedians Jack Martin and H. Foley as Barack Obama and Donald Trump. The evening progressed with some of the best local stand-up comedians Philadelphia has to offer…
