Do You Want to Holler ’til You Pass Out?!

alexbwI hate when people my age are obviously doing so much more with their lives. It’s a difficult personality flaw to accept that not only do I consistently let myself down, but I’m also slightly afraid of success.

Well–it’s a good thing that Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte (both 24 and both from Boulder, Colorado) have gotten off their asses and done something that many consider: worth a shit.

Their band, 3OH!3, or 303 for you fucking squares, has gone Double Platinum and are heating up the charts. Well…if you consider “heating up” to be buried in the south end of the Top Ten…but no matter.

3OH!3‘s latest opus “Want” is one of those albums that have been around for a year, but people are just starting to actually listen to it now…much like MGMT–if MGMT were a duo of hipster white boys trying to disguise themselves as gangsta rappers.

I’ve been listening to this album for a few days now, and I can’t decide where the music fits into my life. It’s electronic music, which is awesome, but at some point it gets annoying. There are several tracks on this release that stand out, so I’ll just pick and choose here.

Don’t Trust Me has been their biggest hit, which makes it the “best worst song” on the album. You’re told to love it, you kinda do, but once you hear it a cuntload of times, you start to only love part of it…then you hear it a cuntload more times, and then you start to hate it. Fortunately, there are those windows of opportunity that you’ll want to hear it, and you will, and you’ll be happy (and you won’t trust a ho).

Starstrukk (with Katy Perry) is a bonus track on the album…although the song is featured in the main album normally, sans Katy Perry. I wasn’t too into the song until I heard the version with Katy Perry being…Katy Perry. It’s catchy…like that Whisper Song…and that Whistle Song…but it doesn’t annoy the piss out of you quite as abruptly.

Chokechain is alright, I guess. I couldn’t find a decent video of it because every single fucking one featured an underage girl or guy with braces dressed as Gangsta Rappers. I guess it kind of speaks for and symbolizes the targeted fan base for 3OH!3, but I’ll still give them a shot.

The band represents something I really hate–usurping a culture that isn’t yours–but, I’m guilty by listening to it, so I suppose I’m just as bad. It works out decently, because 3OH!3 is not targeting a black audience–and they’ll almost certainly not win them over…but the fans seem to be mostly made up of 12 year old girls who think that this is hardcore.

Still Around is unquestionably the best song on the album–and I can prove it! I’ve even found a weird black kid who seems to enjoy it!

I can’t explain exactly why I like 3OH!3. Perhaps it’s their slight similarities to The Ordinary Boys and The Kaiser Chiefs with a little spice of Lil’ Jon thrown in for absolutely no fucking reason.

You’ve heard a few songs here, so you can make up your own minds about the band, but I’d still encourage you to give them a chance. Most of the shit you hear at Warped Tour is fucking lame, and 3OH!3 may be as well…I’m just finding myself slightly excited about where they’re going from here.

…but I said the same thing about Asher Roth, and look where that’s got me.
